The Rise of Digital Passport Stamps

As physical passport stamps become increasingly rare, American Express is offering a modern alternative to the traditional passport stamp. Their new Amex Passport program introduces digital NFT travel stamps that commemorate where you’ve been, what you’ve experienced, and when you traveled,  all privately stored on the blockchain.

How Amex Passport Works

These virtual stamps are non-transferable NFTs, accessible only through the Amex Travel app, and are earned by making a purchase with a U.S.-based Amex card in one of 130 eligible countries or regions, whether through physical or digital payment methods (like Apple Pay or Google Pay). Even past trips (up to 2 years ago) automatically qualify based on your purchase history.

🎟 NFTs for Memories, Not Money

Although the stamps are technically ERC-721 NFTs, Amex avoids using the term “NFT” in the app. The idea is to focus on the emotional significance of travel rather than speculation. Amex Passport creates a personal collection of memories, not tradable assets. No fees apply, the stamps are private, and no personal data is publicly visible on-chain.

Over 20,000 NFT stamps have already been issued as of mid-September, showing strong early adoption.

🌍 Blockchain’s Role in Travel Is Growing

Amex’s initiative is part of a broader trend. In 2023, Lufthansa launched a similar NFT-based loyalty program, and Jeju Island in South Korea is planning to issue NFT tourism resident cards in 2025. Even U.S. government agencies are getting involved. The Department of Commerce is preparing to publish economic data using blockchain.

American Express is also expanding its crypto offerings. A partnership with Coinbase will soon launch a Bitcoin rewards card offering up to 4% back in BTC, based on the user’s crypto holdings.

💬 CoinLaw’s Takeaway

This is how blockchain should be used — not just for trading, but for meaningful digital experiences. What I love most is that Amex doesn’t even label these stamps as NFTs. It keeps the tech behind the scenes and makes things user-friendly. In many ways, that’s the best kind of innovation — invisible, intuitive, and driven by real value.
